A day before the game the jesters in Green Bay buried Brett Favre in absentia for the crime of desertion. On Sunday the living and unrepentant Brett Favre arrived at Lambeau Field.

He entered to an avalanche of boos and hostile laundry; but he came without apparent anger — and with friends named Percy Harvin, Jared Allen, Adrian Peterson and the Minnesota Vikings offensive line.

He also came with a reputation for embracing the pressures of the Big Moment. It is the hallmark he cherishes most. No one in big-time professional sports does it with more relish. When it was over Sunday Favre had thrown four touchdown passes and, with their 38-26 victory, thrust the Vikings into an all-but impregnable lead in the National Football Conference’s North with a 7-1 record. It means a probable home field advantage in the winter playoffs. And it seemed to make almost inevitable a showdown between the Vikings and the undefeated New Orleans Saints somewhere in the playoffs leading to the Super Bowl.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Should Congress take action to protect collective bargaining agreements in professional sports from state law challenges, like the one that prevented the NFL from suspending the Minnesota Vikings’ defensive tackles Pat Williams and Kevin Williams after they tested positive for banned substances?

The chairman the House Energy and Commerce Committee indicated today that he thinks so, siding with National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell.

“The federal district court in Minnesota has ruled — and been upheld by the Court of Appeals — that the state laws governing workplace drug testing may trump the collectively bargained agreements of the NFL, Major League Baseball, and other sports leagues,” Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., said today in prepared testimony at a hearing of the Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection Subcommittee. “This is a serious problem because some state laws undermine the stringent sanctions established by the sports leagues and their players associations.”

Waxman added that if the Williamses ultimately won on the grounds that Minnesota state law supersedes their collective bargaining agreements, the rulings “could wreak havoc with policies to curb performance-enhancing drug use in professional sports.”

J.J. Hardy, the former Milwaukee Brewers shortstop and the newest Minnesota Twin, sounded like he had been rescued after months at sea.

This morning, the Twins traded the spirited but clueless outfielder Carlos Gomez (hold your applause) for Hardy, whose poor hitting landed him in the minors last Aug. 12 after back-to-back 20-homer seasons. Milwaukee recalled Hardy from Class AAA Nashville on Sept. 1, but long before that Hardy figured he was a goner. Trade rumors started in May, and the Brewers appeared committed to top prospect Alcides Escobar as the shortstop instead of Hardy, who hit a career-worst .229.

“I was happy when (the season) ended,” Hardy said in a noontime conference call. “I don’t want to think about it anymore.”

Bing’s NBA career lasted 12 seasons, nine with the Detroit Pistons.

As mayor, he has laid off workers and demanded a 10 percent wage cut to help address the city’s ongoing budget deficit.

It was the fourth time Detroit voters cast ballots this year for mayor.

Bing received the most votes in a February primary and defeated incumbent Ken Cockrel Jr. in a May runoff to complete Kwame Kilpatrick’s second term. Kilpatrick resigned as part of pleas in two criminal cases.

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Delonte West was indicted Tuesday on additional weapons and traffic charges stemming from his Sept. 17 arrest for speeding on a motorcycle and carrying multiple weapons.

The eight-count indictment sheds no new light on why West, 26, was riding a motorcycle on the Capital Beltway in Prince George’s County, Md., at 10 p.m. with two loaded handguns and a loaded shotgun. Prosecutors on Wednesday added an 8 1/2-inch Bowie knife to the list of concealed weapons West was carrying.

It’s illegal in Maryland to carry concealed weapons and to transport loaded handguns.

West was indicted on two counts of carrying a dangerous weapon, two counts of carrying a handgun, two counts of transporting a handgun, and one count each of reckless driving and negligent driving. The charges are all misdemeanors. Each weapons count carries a penalty of up to three years in prison.

West was initially charged with just two counts of carrying a handgun and with driving in excess of reasonable and prudent speed.

Court records don’t list a lawyer for West. His agent, Noah Croom, did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

West has been treated in the past for bipolar disorder, and last week his wife filed a domestic violence report against him in Ohio. No charges have been filed.

West, who could still face a league suspension over the charges in Maryland, made his season debut during Saturday night’s 90-79 win against Charlotte, scoring 13 points in 24 minutes. He was expected to play in Tuesday night’s game against Washington.

Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry, who along with team doctors has been handling West’s delicate state on a daily basis, issued a statement following the release of the new charges against West.

“It is our understanding that today’s developments are part of the legal process that continues to take place with Delonte and he and his legal counsel will handle that,” Ferry said. “We will continue to take this matter very seriously and monitor and respect the legal process as it proceeds, but not speculate or comment about it.”

Cavs coach Mike Brown didn’t want to speculate on the possibility of West doing jail time.

“I believe in the process, I’m going to let it unfold and go from there,” Brown said.

After the arrest, West reported to training camp on time but missed the team’s first four practices without an excuse. He returned, but then left the team for a week to deal with personal matters. He missed all eight preseason games and Cleveland’s first three regular-season games.

West, who lives in Brandywine, Md., was riding a three-wheel motorcycle when he cut off a police officer on the beltway in Upper Marlboro, authorities said. The officer pulled him over, and the weapons were discovered.

An NBA spokesman said Tuesday that the league was “monitoring the situation” with West, but would not institute any punishment at the moment. NBA Commissioner David Stern has some leeway to impose disciplinary penalties before a player is convicted of a crime, but does not always do so. If West is convicted, he will face league discipline. The Cavaliers declined comment but said they would have an update later Tuesday evening.

Glenn F. Ivey, the county State’s Attorney who brought the charges against West, said in a telephone interview that West was still released on his own recognizance until the trial date is set. It is not likely that West, who has yet to hire counsel to address the charges, would have to stand trial during the season if he and his attorney seek a continuance.

“We’re trying to treat this like any other case,” Ivey said.

Compared with other states, such as New York, Maryland treads relatively lightly with regard to sentences for first-time offenders convicted of crimes while using guns. PG County has tried to institute minimum sentences of one year for first-time gun offenders with little success. West was captured on a police car’s “cruise cam” during the incident.

It is not known whether the county would accept a plea bargain on West’s behalf. Other similar cases in the past have resulted in plea bargains that usually revolved around home detention for a specific period of time.

TNT and NBA.com analyst David Aldridge contributed to this report.

Arsenal’s French defender Gael Clichy is set to be sidelined for several weeks after suffering a back injury.

The left-back, who played in Saturday’s 3-0 home victory over north London rivals Tottenham, will have a scan.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger said: “We fear a stress fracture of the back, we will know more on Tuesday but if it is the case he’ll be out for a few weeks.”

Kieran Gibbs will deputise for Clichy, 24, in Wednesday’s Champions League clash against AZ Alkmaar.

The injury could also rule Clichy out of France’s World Cup play-offs against Ireland on 14 November in Dublin and four days later in Paris.

Wenger believes that 20-year-old Gibbs, who he has touted as a prospect for England’s World Cup squad next year, can deal with the added pressure.

He stated: “I was very comfortable to have the solution to rest Clichy when needed and play Gibbs when necessary.

“Now a huge stress will be on Gibbs to play in every game. Manager Fabio Capello and England will be happy because they want him to play in every game but losing Clichy is still a blow for us.

“But I have every confidence about Gibbs. I have said that many times.”

Clichy also missed the end of last season with a back injury.

The news is a further blow for the Gunners, who have had striker Nicklas Bendtner ruled out for at least four weeks because of a groin problem.

Former manager Alan Curbishley has won his case for constructive dismissal against West Ham.

A Premier League managers’ arbitration tribunal upheld Curbishley’s claim after the 51-year-old left the top-flight club in September 2008.

Curbishley resigned after defenders Anton Ferdinand and George McCartney were sold against his wishes.

The tribunal, which dismissed a counterclaim by the Hammers, has yet to decide on the amount of compensation.

“I am obviously delighted with this result,” said Curbishley.

“I very much enjoyed my time at West Ham and never wanted to leave, but on joining the club I insisted that my contract contained a clause confirming that I would have final say on the selection of players to be transferred to and from the club.

“The club completely ignored my contract when selling Anton Ferdinand, and when George McCartney was then sold, the club having given me assurances that no players would be leaving the club after the sale of Anton Ferdinand, I had no alternative but to resign.

“My authority and integrity were undermined and my position was made untenable. I now wish to put this entire matter behind me.”

The former Charlton boss launched his case after the Hammers counterclaimed for the cost of employing Curbishley’s successor Gianfranco Zola and his assistant Steve Clarke.

“Naturally we are delighted with the outcome for Alan but, at the same time, sorry that he wasn’t able to continue at West Ham United, a club that has played such a prominent part in his professional career both as a player and manager,” said League Managers’ Association chief executive Richard Bevan.

“The findings of the tribunal demonstrate the critical importance of respecting contracts which need to set out the roles and responsibilities of the parties in clear and unequivocal terms.”

Curbishley made 85 first-team appearances for West Ham during his playing career and rejoined the club as manager in December 2006, saving them from relegation in his first season.

In his first full campaign at Upton Park, Curbishley steered West Ham to a 10th-place finish in the Premier League.

The Curbishley ruling comes a month after former Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan won his constructive dismissal case against the Magpies.

The British star, who has slipped from a career high of second in the world in August to a current position of fourth, will finish the season by playing at this month’s Paris Masters 1000 and ATP World Tour Finals in London.

Murray next faces Leonardo Mayer after the Argentine upset Russia’s Igor Andreev 6-3 6-3.

Among the players still looking to nail down one of the last two places at the season-ending World Tour Finals in London, fifth seed Gilles Simon of France had an easy 6-3 6-2 win over Russia’s Igor Kunitsyn.

Simon’s compatriot Gael Monfils, the number six seed, defeated Spanish wild card Marcel Granollers 6-4 6-2 while seventh-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo outlasted Belgian qualifier Christophe Rochus 6-0 5-7 6-3 in a match which finished deep into the night.

Murray will end his association with Fred Perry-branded sportswear when he signs a new kit deal with German giant adidas, to take effect from the start of 2010. He will wear the kit in competition for the first time at the Hopman Cup in January.
